Rarely do I have a patient who is very sore and stiff several weeks later. Massaging the affected area can help to soften up some of the stiffness and any potential slight scar tissue underneath the skin as well as help to reduce the soreness.

Slight stiffness and soreness following your liposuction procedure is no cause for alarm, as the body is still in recovery. During this time, do not overexert yourself, which may prolong the healing process. Within days you should be able to go back to work and resume work and exercise.

A cannula is tube inserted into the body via an incision on the skin used to remove fat during liposuction. When liposuction was first developed, the trend was to use large cannulas of 6 mm in size or greater. Over the past couple of decades there has been a trend to using much smaller (micro) cannulas to perform liposuction surgery. I find personally that it is important to use micro-cannulas at the surface which are usually only 2 mm in diameter. For the deeper removal of fat, to de-bulk the deeper layers typically, I prefer to use cannulas at approximately 3 mm in size during liposuction. As I gradually move up in the fat layer towards the surface of the skin I change over to using a very small micro cannula to fine-tune the surface of the skin. I personally find that using a very small spatula cannula at the surface of the skin is ideal to obtain a very smooth contour of the surface of the skin and to control exactly how much retraction of skin I choose to get into each area.

A common question I receive from patients looking into liposuction is whether they are a good candidate for the procedure. A good liposuction candidate is a patient who has disproportionate fat storages. Another way of looking at this is the patient’s stubborn areas that never seemed to come off with diet and exercise. If a person is disproportionate those areas are usually the first areas that get fat and the last areas if ever to come off with diet and exercise. This is an ideal candidate for liposuction. In addition a good candidate is a patient who has quite good elastic skin tone. When a patient has good elastic skin tone, it allows the surgeon to be more aggressive in those areas. If a person has just simply looseness of the skin or possibly the muscle, liposuction surgery may not be indicated and as the skin elasticity decreases and becomes more wrinkled the surgeon himself should be more conservative in terms of the fat removal with respect for that skin. If the skin elasticity is too poor, liposuction may not be the best way to approach it as it can cause more wrinkling of the skin.

If used properly, the local anesthesia (commonly referred to as tumescent anesthesia), poses no serious complications during liposuction. Some patients may experience some swelling and bruising, but the symptoms often go away on their own. These results fade in a matter of days, if not hours. The most common complication is irregularities or unevenness in the area post-liposuction, but with a skilled surgeon, the risk of complication can be easily avoided. To minimize the risk of undesired results, I urge those looking into liposuction to do prior research on the surgeon and procedure.

Some patients may experience bleeding, bruising and swelling during and after their liposuction. These complications can be minimized by first assessing the patients’ respective body types and using instruments and techniques in relation to this.
